Vita
Geboren am 13.6.1935 im bulgarischen Gabrovo als Christo Vladimirov Javacheff kam er schon früh in Kontakt mit Kunst, da seine Mutter Generalsekretärin der Akademie der Schönen Künste in Sofia gewesen war und ihm von befreundeten Künstlern Mal- und Zeichenstunden geben ließ. Dadurch wurde sein künstlerisches Talent früh erkannt.

Bereits kurz nach seinem Kunststudium an den Kunstakademien in Sofia und Wien schuf er Arbeiten mit eingewickelten Objekten. Im Jahr 1961 entwickelte er zusammen mit Jeanne-Claude, die auf den Tag so alt war wie er, ihr erstes Projekt für ein eingepacktes Objekt im öffentlichen Raum – sie stapelten im Kölner Hafen Ölfässer auf und verhüllten sie.

Christo ist am 31. Mai 2020 in New York verstorben.

Großprojekte
Von ihrem Wohnort New York aus planten und realisierten sie ab 1968 weitere Großprojekte, u.a.* Running Fence* (Kalifornien 1976), *Surrounded Islands* (Miami 1983), *The Pont Neuf wrapped* (Paris 1985), *The Umbrellas* (Japan – USA 1991), *Wrapped Reichstag* (Berlin 1995) und *The Gates* (New York 2005). Christos bislang letztes Projekt musste er ohne Jeanne-Claude, die 2009 gestorben war, vollenden. Es fand im Juni 2016 unter dem Titel *The Floating Piers* (Lago Iseo 2016) statt. Christos letztes Projekt, das posthum realisiert wurde, war der verhüllte Arc de Triomphe in Paris 2021.
